A Parent's Special Role in AYSO
A parent's role is to contribute to the needs and development of your child through encouragement and by setting a good example. You can help assure that all the players learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline. By playing soccer, young people learn to work together, to sacrifice for the good of the team, to enjoy winning and deal appropriately with defeat, all while becoming physically fit and healthy. Best of all, they have fun!
Please take some time to download and read our Parent's Handbook. You can get the handbook here.
Support Your Child
Supporting your child by giving encouragement, participating as a volunteer and showing interest in their team is very important. Help your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. Teach your child that hard work and an honest effort are often more important than victory. That way your child will always be a winner despite the outcome of the game!
Always Be Positive
Parents serve as role models for their children. Become aware of this and work to be a positive role model. Applaud good plays by your child's team as well as good plays by the opposing team. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sports activities.
Consider Volunteering with the League
AYSO is an all volunteer organization. The coaches, assistant coaches referees, team parents, conssessions workers, and field setup crew are all volunteers.
No previous experience necessary, consider your interests and pick a volunteer position.

Learn the game!
As parents, we often watch our child playing and disagree with referee calls or get angry at no referee calls and sometimes wonder what just happened. An excellent and non-intimidating way to become more informed is to attend one of our Assistant Referee (AR) classes. Even if you have no desire to referee, the AR class is a basic and informal introduction to the rules and fundamentals of the game. Check out our calendar for the next AR class!
